LUCHON

FRANCE

34 km from Vielha.

On the French border at Port deth Portilhon, this small French town has been known since antiquity for its thermal waters.

The centre of Luchon is built around the Allées d’Etigny, an avenue that leads to the thermal bath district and the centennial Quinconces Park.

Already famous for its baths in Roman times, in the mid 18th century Luchon began to be frequented by the great names of period, from Richelieu to Napoleon III. As a legacy of these visits from French high society, Luchon is blessed with an elegant architectural heritage that can be admired as you stroll its streets, with an abundance of refined and picturesque villas, chalets, townhouses and pocket-sized mansions, not to mention an Italian theatre, a casino, built in the 19th century, and several museums, among them an aeronautic museum that is well worth a visit.

From Luchon you can travel up to the Superbagnères ski resort via a cable car that leaves from the centre of town. In only 8 minutes it will whisk you up to an altitude of 1,860 metres, where you can admire the spectacular Pyrenean panorama spread out before you.
